Why You Should Never Shave Your Double Coated Dog!

It is very common to think shaving your double coated dog (labs, goldens, samoyeds, sheppards, ect) is a good idea.
"they seem to be hot in the summer" "it will stop shedding" "I can't handle the fur,  it'll grow back"
Unfortunately, none of those is true. Shaving a double coated dog actually makes those excuses worse. During the summer their coat deflects the heat and allows the cool air to circulate.  If you shave off that protection,  you are making them more susceptible to hear stroke, sun burns and more. Double coated dogs will shed. Sorry :(! Shaving them will just make the shedding fur smaller and making it more likely for the hair to poke you and cause hair slivers. The hair on a double coated dog is forever growing, shedding is the way for the dead hair to fall off and make room for new hair.  If you shave the hair, it won't be heavy enough to fall out and the pores will clog up and there is a very high chance the hair won't grow back! If it does, it will likely be a different colour,  texture,  it only grow back in random spots like the picture shown here.  It is always better to use frequent brushing and trim ups!

If your dog has a health problem,  shaving may be the only option,  however always talk to your vet!
