What To Buy This Halloween For Your Furry Trick Or Treaters!

It seems like Halloween is just around the corner. Some of you may be thinking: What kind of candy? What am I going to be? And every pet owner is thinking; should I get something for the trick or treating dogs?? YES! Nothing says "Best Neighbor Ever" than being prepared with some treats for the furry family member. Most dogs on Halloween are all dressed up too, they deserve something for that no?

But what treat? There are so many types of treats out there: small dog, big dog, all natural, dental, metabolic, just to name a few. Also, should we buy some or just make some? Unfortunately, most pet owners don't mind giving their pet a treat on Halloween, but are apprehensive when it is home made, they just don't know what it is made from and if there are any ingredients they might not agree with. When giving treats to such a large number of different dogs in different situations it is always best to go for a store bought brand that everyone knows and can look up ingredients and product info before they decide to give it to their pet.

What is a treat you can get that you can feed just about any dog? Were here to help! Here's a few treats you can buy that almost all dogs will enjoy!

First what treats to avoid:
  • Rawhide: rawhide is subjective to only a few dogs: they can damage teeth on dogs with dental problems, they can be too hard to digest for much larder dogs that can chomp off big pieces and they can be a choking hazard for small dogs
  • Treats specifically for large dogs: Large dog treats can contain high amounts of fat, starch and be too large in size for smaller dogs.
  • Treats for medical treatment: certain treats are high in certain ingredient to assist certain dogs with gastrointestinal problems, along with some treats high in particular vitamins for dogs with deficiencies. In healthy dogs these extra high doses can cause a other health problems.
Now, some great treats to stock up on this year:
  • Fruitables® Skinny Minis® Soft And Chewy: These treats are great for many reasons; they are a great size for all dogs, they come in great flavors (apple bacon, chicken, pumpkin mango), each treat only contains 9 calories, they are easy to chew for dogs with sore teeth and sweet and juicy for those with a normal bite! Best part is they are very healthy for a treat, the first 3 ingredients are sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and ground brown rice. For such great ingredients and a great price of $6.49 for a 5oz bag, they're a great healthy option this year. They are sold at PetSmart and other popular pet food stores. • Iams® ProActive Health® Weight Control Adult Dog Biscuits: These treats are great because even if you see a healthy dog, they can still benefit from a fat controlled treat. They might not be the most organic, no byproduct treat, but Halloween isn't for the healthy! For $9.99 for a 4lb box they are a great affordable treat for Halloween. These treats are available at PetSmart, Walmart and other large name pet stores. To learn more about this treat Click Here!
  • NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® Skin & Coat Adult Dog Biscuit: Who doesn't love when their dog have great skin and a soft coat!? Nutro is known for their healthy ingredients and they didn't disappoint in this treat. The first 5 ingredients are chicken, whole brown rice, whole wheat, oatmeal, and flaxseed. For only $9.99 for a 32oz bag, this is a great healthy treat this Halloween! You can buy them at PetSmart and other large pet food stores. To learn more Click Here!

Hope this helps all of you this year while shopping for your treats this Halloween!

How Pet-Prepared Are You For Emergencies?

Many people have the "it won't happen to me"- it is, however, unfortunately it does. But how prepared are YOU? We all know how much food and water to store for the human parts of the family. Do you know how much food, water, etc. you need to sustain your pet(s)? SPCA is on a mission to alert the public about the importance of being prepared. With the recent wildfires and other evacuation causing emergencies, the SPCA get crammed with supplying the evacuated family with pet supplies they forgot.

During an emergency evacuation it is very easy to forget bowls and leashes so it is VITAL for everyone to have a  pet emergency kit. Not only is it important to have 1 WEEKS supply of food and water, but it is just as important to have the items to serve the water and food, along with leashes and an identification tag incase of separation during evacuation. Each pet emergency kit should contain:
  1. 1 week (7 day) supply of food and water. Most dry pet food has a long shelf life, it doesn't need to be organic fancy food. Remember, its survival food
  2.  Food and water bowls. Buy a second pair to keep in the kit, separate from the everyday use bowls.
  3. Identification tag collar, incase of separation
  4. A sturdy crate. In some cases pets may need to be staked on top of each other for space/allergies in cramped spaces. So your Gucci soft, foldable pet purse, might not suffice.
  5. Pet blankets incase of cool or wet weather for warmth
  6. Plastic bags for poop pick up, or a small litter box/newspaper for cats
  7. A copy of your pets vaccination history - for validation if needed. Some emergency shelters won't allow pets that don't have proof of vaccination for safety reasons
  8. Medications - always keep pet meds in an easily accessible place that is easy to get in an emergency situation.
  9. A pet first aid kit - buy one at a pet store, or click here to make one of your own here with the help of the humane society!
  10. A toy or two will always help keep pets busy/keep them company if stacked
*Having a list near your pet emergency kit will help make sure if you have to leave quick, you have everything you need!*

No one likes to think of an emergency, especially in their own town, but it happens. The best thing you can do is be prepared! With those 10 simple items, your pet emergency kit will keep you and your pet thriving in any emergency situation.
