An adult colouring book for veterinary workers!

Happy Hump Day!

Although I am not currently in school, I do work and love veterinary education. I also love adult colouring books, I mean who doesn't?! I have been known to buy textbooks just for enjoyment *nerd alert* and while browsing the web for a new textbook I came across the "Saunders Veterinary anatomy Coloring Book" yes you heard that right VETERINARY COLORING BOOK! It was a little pricier than regular colouring books but I couldn't resist, so I bought it. A few weeks later I excitedly received my package. I open the package like a kid at Christmas and bask in the glory of my new purchase. I open the first page and my jaw droped at the first colouring page, the depth of the anatomy and the endless learning opportunities.
I eagerly started to colour and flip through the pages; cats, dogs, bovine, horses and swine. So much to learn so much to colour.
Do you love animals, learning and colouring? You will LOVE this book.
Not only is it a peaceful activity but you will learn so much and who doesn't like to doodle on their textbooks!
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves animals, learning, or doodling!

You Won't Believe What This Woman Did To Make Her Dog "Shut Up"

*Warning, this post will make you so angry inside and want to beat a fellow pet “owner”*

Katie Brown of Florida did something horrible over the past week and is undoubtedly proud of it. Which I can't comprehend, and neither can most of Facebook.

Katie decided to duct tape her dog's mouth shut to stop him from barking. She then concidered it a success after 60 seconds, which she then decided to take a photo and add it to Facebook. What possess someone to do something like that and then to post a photo on Facebook is just sickening.

And I have to say: this has gone TOO far now! I saw this image on my news feed a few days ago and immediately reported it. Now it is all over the internet and I am noticing other people like myself that reported the photo are getting nowhere with this photo. When I reported the image I got a message back saying “your report has been processed” that was it. I have heard from others that they also got that message but with some it was also said that “it does not violate their community standards”.

I want you to look this dog in the eyes and tell me you don’t see terror. If this is a “lesson” then I ask you WHAT IS A PUNISHMENT!? Not only can these actions not be tolerated but this horrible “it was only for 60seconds, lesson learned” attitude is despiteful! Who can honestly believe that tape was on for 60 seconds, and if it was, who has ripped duct tape off a hairy part of their skin? Or worse a tender place such as your nose or under your chin.

This has just got to stop, it is should our youth that it doesn’t matter what you do to your dog as long as it is only for 60 seconds the police wont do anything about it. Just come on Facebook. Realize what you are advertising here. I can’t post a picture of my nipple, which is used to feed a nourishing baby, which is against your community standards, but a woman is purposely and proudly abusing an animal and it’s A-OK. I wouldn’t want to live in Facebook’s community, that’s for sure. They are quite literally building a community where nourishing a child is against policy but taping a dogs mouth shut and being proud of it is totally okay. Just come on. This is just a joke right?

I just sure hope the police really are getting involved as much as they are saying they will.

5 Things Everyone Needs This Winter For Their Pets!

The best way to be safe and healthy this winter is to be prepared! I’ve compiled 5 of the most important items to have ready this year.

1.       Jackets – It is very important to have jackets ready in case of an extreme cold front. Even though your dog may love the snow and/or the cold, that doesn’t mean your dog will be warm being stranded in the cold when your car breaks down. It is always a great thing to have in the house and in the car.

2.       Extra Food – Extra food is vital to have this winter. Nothing is worse than being snowed in with a huge storm coming, except being snowed in waiting for a storm and being almost out of food.

3.       Pad Balm – Thanks to the salt on the road mixed with the dry air, our pet’s paw pads are at risk. The pads on our pets are tough enough to support our pets throughout their lifetime, but like our hands and feet, during the winter a little balm goes a long way. There are many different brands of pad and paw balm, buyers choice!

4.       Reflective Leashes/Collars – Not only is nighttime coming quicker in the day, but it is harder to see with all the snow and other weather conditions. Reflective leashes and collars are a great tool this winter because not only does it help vehicles see you, but the streetlights can illuminate you for other walkers with possibly not so friendly dogs.

5.       Oatmeal and Skin Care Shampoos and Conditioners – Whether you bathe your pet or you go to a groomer for bathing, it is a good idea to buy or request a skin care shampoo and conditioner. A staple of skin care shampoos and conditioners are oatmeal products. Oatmeal is great for the skin and many skin care shampoos and conditioners contain oatmeal on some level, but like furry kisses, the more the better!

Have an amazing and safe winter!!

What To Buy This Halloween For Your Furry Trick Or Treaters!

It seems like Halloween is just around the corner. Some of you may be thinking: What kind of candy? What am I going to be? And every pet owner is thinking; should I get something for the trick or treating dogs?? YES! Nothing says "Best Neighbor Ever" than being prepared with some treats for the furry family member. Most dogs on Halloween are all dressed up too, they deserve something for that no?

But what treat? There are so many types of treats out there: small dog, big dog, all natural, dental, metabolic, just to name a few. Also, should we buy some or just make some? Unfortunately, most pet owners don't mind giving their pet a treat on Halloween, but are apprehensive when it is home made, they just don't know what it is made from and if there are any ingredients they might not agree with. When giving treats to such a large number of different dogs in different situations it is always best to go for a store bought brand that everyone knows and can look up ingredients and product info before they decide to give it to their pet.

What is a treat you can get that you can feed just about any dog? Were here to help! Here's a few treats you can buy that almost all dogs will enjoy!

First what treats to avoid:
  • Rawhide: rawhide is subjective to only a few dogs: they can damage teeth on dogs with dental problems, they can be too hard to digest for much larder dogs that can chomp off big pieces and they can be a choking hazard for small dogs
  • Treats specifically for large dogs: Large dog treats can contain high amounts of fat, starch and be too large in size for smaller dogs.
  • Treats for medical treatment: certain treats are high in certain ingredient to assist certain dogs with gastrointestinal problems, along with some treats high in particular vitamins for dogs with deficiencies. In healthy dogs these extra high doses can cause a other health problems.
Now, some great treats to stock up on this year:
  • Fruitables® Skinny Minis® Soft And Chewy: These treats are great for many reasons; they are a great size for all dogs, they come in great flavors (apple bacon, chicken, pumpkin mango), each treat only contains 9 calories, they are easy to chew for dogs with sore teeth and sweet and juicy for those with a normal bite! Best part is they are very healthy for a treat, the first 3 ingredients are sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and ground brown rice. For such great ingredients and a great price of $6.49 for a 5oz bag, they're a great healthy option this year. They are sold at PetSmart and other popular pet food stores. To learn more about this treat Click Here!
  • Iams® ProActive Health® Weight Control Adult Dog Biscuits: These treats are great because even if you see a healthy dog, they can still benefit from a fat controlled treat. They might not be the most organic, no byproduct treat, but Halloween isn't for the healthy! For $9.99 for a 4lb box they are a great affordable treat for Halloween. These treats are available at PetSmart, Walmart and other large name pet stores. To learn more about this treat Click Here!
  • NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® Skin & Coat Adult Dog Biscuit: Who doesn't love when their dog have great skin and a soft coat!? Nutro is known for their healthy ingredients and they didn't disappoint in this treat. The first 5 ingredients are chicken, whole brown rice, whole wheat, oatmeal, and flaxseed. For only $9.99 for a 32oz bag, this is a great healthy treat this Halloween! You can buy them at PetSmart and other large pet food stores. To learn more Click Here!

Hope this helps all of you this year while shopping for your treats this Halloween!

How Pet-Prepared Are You For Emergencies?

Many people have the "it won't happen to me"- it is, however, unfortunately it does. But how prepared are YOU? We all know how much food and water to store for the human parts of the family. Do you know how much food, water, etc. you need to sustain your pet(s)? SPCA is on a mission to alert the public about the importance of being prepared. With the recent wildfires and other evacuation causing emergencies, the SPCA get crammed with supplying the evacuated family with pet supplies they forgot.

During an emergency evacuation it is very easy to forget bowls and leashes so it is VITAL for everyone to have a  pet emergency kit. Not only is it important to have 1 WEEKS supply of food and water, but it is just as important to have the items to serve the water and food, along with leashes and an identification tag incase of separation during evacuation. Each pet emergency kit should contain:
  1. 1 week (7 day) supply of food and water. Most dry pet food has a long shelf life, it doesn't need to be organic fancy food. Remember, its survival food
  2.  Food and water bowls. Buy a second pair to keep in the kit, separate from the everyday use bowls.
  3. Identification tag collar, incase of separation
  4. A sturdy crate. In some cases pets may need to be staked on top of each other for space/allergies in cramped spaces. So your Gucci soft, foldable pet purse, might not suffice.
  5. Pet blankets incase of cool or wet weather for warmth
  6. Plastic bags for poop pick up, or a small litter box/newspaper for cats
  7. A copy of your pets vaccination history - for validation if needed. Some emergency shelters won't allow pets that don't have proof of vaccination for safety reasons
  8. Medications - always keep pet meds in an easily accessible place that is easy to get in an emergency situation.
  9. A pet first aid kit - buy one at a pet store, or click here to make one of your own here with the help of the humane society!
  10. A toy or two will always help keep pets busy/keep them company if stacked
*Having a list near your pet emergency kit will help make sure if you have to leave quick, you have everything you need!*

No one likes to think of an emergency, especially in their own town, but it happens. The best thing you can do is be prepared! With those 10 simple items, your pet emergency kit will keep you and your pet thriving in any emergency situation.

I'm Alive! Oh & A DOG TRAIN? Yes Please!

I wanted to thank everyone for their patience as I fought off a really bad flu the past little while! Although not 100%, I can look at a screen without getting a migraine. I am back from the dead and will be back up and posting immediately!

With that being said, while I was sick and when I wasn't sleeping, which was literally 99% of my day, I would browse animal sites. I saw something that just floored me! I came across something titled "Man makes a vehicle to bring his many dogs around." Of course I had to check it out. I was assuming it would be something along the lines of a large vehicle, packed to the rim with some cute pups.

To my pleasant surprise, when I opened the link I saw a heart warming story about a man in Frost Worth, Texas by the name of Eugene Bostick. He is 80 years old, and so full of love! This amazing man has adopted around 7 dogs and really wanted to be able to bring them all into town. One day when seeing a tractor pulling multiple carts, he got a pretty darn smart idea!

Eugene built a train with multiple cabooses to bring the dogs around! Not only is it super adorable, but he says the dogs thoroughly enjoy it! I do know about you, but I would LOVE to travel by mini train every day!!

Hope you enjoyed this adorable story, don't forget to like and share!!

*Exclusive Interview* Landmine and Tuberculosis sniffing rats? You heard that right! Our interview with Apopo: Training Rats To Save Lives!

Flickr: Apopo's HeroRATs - Photo by Xavier Rossi

When we think of sniffing out landmines and tuberculosis, we immediately think dogs. Well, Apopo is changing the norm of life saving animals! Apopo trains rats to sniff out landmines and tuberculosis and they're results will amaze you. The second I heard about their amazing business, I had to speak with them! Petopolis had an exclusive chance to ask them about their interesting life savers.

Apopo began in 1995 by Bart Weetjens, what gave him the idea to use rats for scent orientated tasks, instead of a more common animal, such as a dog?

Bart kept pet rats as a child and got to know the little animals as intelligent, trainable and with a very accurate sense of smell (he even took them with him to school, hiding them in his sweater!). Years later, during his studies he was analyzing the landmine problem in Sub Saharan Africa and it struck him how expensive and dangerous the process of landmine clearance is. When he came across an article about gerbils detecting explosives in airports, relying on their strong sense of smell, he remembered his own pet rats, put two and two together and got the idea to start training rats as a cheaper, more efficient and readily available means to detect landmines in war-torn countries. He consulted with Professor Ron Verhagen, a rodent expert at the University of Antwerp, who recommended the giant African pouched rat (Cricetomys gambianus) because of its long lifespan and adaptation to the conditions in Africa. As mentioned, the species is known for its very sensitive sense of smell and they can be trained to detect TNT, the explosive mostly used in landmines (and the more training they get, the better/more sensitive to certain target smells they become). They aren’t heavy enough to trigger landmines, but quite sizeable and easy to handle and they are inexpensive to house and feed. They also aren’t picky about whom they work with as they don’t really bond with their trainers. They work well with everyone so we can easily send them to our different operational sites.

So far, what are the rats detecting?

We currently have two applications with our scent detection technology – we have trained rats to detect landmines or tuberculosis. We use a training methodology called ‘operant conditioning’, based on clickr training. Both the mine detection rats and the TB detection rats are trained on a specific target scent: TNT for the landmines and TB bacteria in human sputum samples for the tuberculosis detection. We train the rats to associate the target scent with a click sound and food reward.
So far our mine action teams have helped clear 24 million square meters of land, whereby over 58,000 landmines and other unexploded ordnances and our TB detection rats have helped screen over 317,000 sputum samples, thereby finding over 8,500 TB patients that were initially missed by conventional diagnostic methods like microscopy.

Where are the landmine rats sent once they are done training?

At the moment we have landmine clearance projects with the rats in Mozambique, Angola and Cambodia. In Cambodia the rats are still undergoing in-country training, in preparation of their final external accreditation test. Once they pass the test, the rats and their handlers get a license to be working in the actual minefields. We hope they will be operational by the end of the year.

Are there any plans for using the rats to detect anything else in the future?

In theory, you could develop a whole range of potential scent-detection applications in different sectors. For example; medical (cancer, diabetes), environmental (pipeline corrosion, wood mold, microbial growth in buildings), contaminated food/water (salmonella, legionella, fungus), forensics (blood, gunshot residue), customs (tobacco, narcotics, explosives), and agricultural (termites, screwworms, weevils). APOPO might explore some of these applications in the future if it looks like the rats would be a low cost, low tech solution and if there’s funding available. At the moment we haven’t started researching any of these options but if there would be sufficient funding we’d definitely be interested in developing other scent detection applications with the rats.

How long does it take to train a new rat to detect a landmine?

It takes about 9 months to fully train a landmine detection rat – from socialization till final accreditation test. Every rat is a bit different of course and we have rats that are a bit faster than others but even when they learn very fast we usually keep them in a training schedule to make sure they are fully matured before being send to the actual minefields.

How long does it take to train a new rat to detect Tuberculosis?

The training of the TB detection rats takes usually a bit less time compared to the mine detection rats- about 7-8 months. The setting is a bit different for the TB detection rats (inside) and they don’t have to get used to walking on a leash for example.

How many trained and working rats do you have in your combined programs so far?

We currently have more than 200 rats in different stages of training and at our different operations! We have 39 mine detection rats working in Angola, 43 in Mozambique and 15 are undergoing in-country training in Cambodia in preparation of their final accreditation test by the Cambodian authorities. Our TB center in Maputo works with 9 TB detection rats and in Tanzania we have 36 rats sniffing out TB. We have 70 rats in different stages of training to become mine detection rats and 30 rats in our breeding center. Apart from that, we have some new-born pups that will be dedicated research rats, helping us to better understand their olfactory system and how we can train them to use that system in helping people.

What happens to the rats once they are done working with Apopo?

We have been operating in TB and demining for long enough now that some of our rats have reached retirement age, which is typically between 7 and 8 years. We allow them to work as long as they are performing well, still feel like working and pass weekly health checks. We notice that the rats are generally enthusiastic to get to work but when they are growing old, some simply aren’t motivated anymore. If that happens, when a rat’s performance has declined or it is not healthy enough to continue working, the rat is retired to its home cage. When they are retired to their cages, they receive a healthy diet, are regularly taken out to play and exercise, and continue to receive weekly health checks. If a rat is clearly suffering in its old age or from an untreatable disease, it is humanely euthanized.

How has the world reacted to the amazing abilities of your rats, since most people don’t know just how smart a rat really is?

Overall, surprised, intrigued and amazed :)! But we still face some skepticism towards our rats and the work they do. Although we have been operating in TB detection and demining for long enough to have proven impact in both areas it isn’t always easy to have people look beyond that first reaction of ‘you’re doing what with rats!!??’ Rats are usually not considered as a detection technology that can save lives but they are rather thought of as pests, dirty animals. Our results so far have proven otherwise - they are actually very intelligent animals, and they provide an innovative solution for some humanitarian problems but it will always be a bit challenging to alter that first reaction of many people.

What does the future look like for Apopo?
As for the mine action, we’re excited about the imminent announcement of a mine free Mozambique, the deployment of our HeroRATs in South-East Asia and the clearance of additional mine-affected provinces in Angola. We’re very happy to have been supporting the Mozambican government with mine clearance and we’re proud to announce that the country will declare itself mine-free very soon! Mozambique used to be one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world but we're now in the final stages of freeing the country of the terror of landmines and giving the people of Mozambique their land and lives back. The mine detection rats and their human colleagues have been clearing over 11 million square meters of land, thereby finding and safely destroying over 14,500 landmines and other unexploded ordnances. As mentioned before, the mine detection rats in Cambodia are still in training to get licensed but everything is going well so we’re looking forward deploying them in the minefields in support of the demining teams. In Angola we recently moved to a new province where the rats are doing a great job speeding up the clearance work. Our head of mine action, fundraising manager and local offices in Geneva and the US are also constantly looking into possible partnerships and ways of funding so we can expand to other countries and help governments freeing the country of mines/UXO but this is a very time-consuming process.

As for the TB detection work, there are some very important studies underway, helping us to prove that the detection rat technology has added value compared to existing diagnostics, with regards to accuracy, cost-effectiveness, ease of use, and better clinical outcomes for patients. We’re also looking into ways to expand to other countries but main issue there is finding the necessary funding.

A super big thank you to Apopo for their time and all the lives they are changing every day!

Invasive testing on chimps will finally soon be over!

Amazing news for animal lovers and chimps alike! The US has declared that they will be placing chimpanzees, both captive and wild, on the 'endangered' list. That would make it illegal to do anything that harms or harassed the animal, as well as anything that doesn't "further the existence" and/or "benefit the existence" of the animal (such as biomedical research or abusively training performing chimps). As of the 14th of this month, September, any lab will need a permit to do any further testing on the chimps. As of now, no scientists have filed for a permit to do any further testing on chimps. It will also be illegal to "take" a captive chimpanzee in the US.

There are around 750 chimps in laboratories and many more in performance and zoos that are now protects and ill be given a second lease at life. The next step is to relocate our closest cousins to sanctuaries, where they will have much more space and will live among other chimps which is vital to their emotional health.

This is great news, however, this is hopefully just the beginning. This does not affect the other animals such as rice, cats, dogs, rabbits, etc. still being tested on. People are hopeful this will help open the eyes of the general public to all the other animals being inhumanly tested on.

We will keep everyone updated as everything transpires!

You WON'T believe what these fishermen caught at Warrior River in Alabama!

What a great way to start September! We have something absolutely amazing and so heart warming to kick off the month!

Jason Frost and Brandon Key, two fishermen from Alabama, were fishing at Warrior River and heard a small splash coming from the water a little ways away. Assuming it is a fish jumping out of the water they turn to see what was making all the noise, the men were understandably caught off guard when they see a small, orange, emaciated kitten swimming towards them! Thankfully the men decided to pull out their phones and record this heroic act of kindness.

In the video you can hear one of the men explain "Were out here on the Warrior River, and ya'll are not going to believe what's swimming towards our boat - a kitten!" Once the kitten reaches the boat Jason pulls the kitten from the river and is repaid with meows, purrs and down right adorable kitten love. In the background you can hear Brandon, who is recording the rescue say "I heard another splash," suggesting there is another kitten that needs help. Sure enough after a few seconds you can see another tiny, helpless kitten swimming to freedom. Once the second kitten is pulled into the boat you can obviously tell the two are siblings, and understandably filled with relief. At the end of the video you can see the two kittens rubbing against each other in victory that they had been rescued.

The men say that the kittens stayed and kept them company all day long, and once they got to land they dried off the little angels and gave them some water. Immediately after reaching the land a woman and her two young children became infatuated with the brave little kittens and immediately offered to adopt them. The men speculate that the kittens must of been purposely abandoned as there are no houses for miles.

The video has gone viral with over 1 million views, and it should, these men saved the kittens' lives! It is sad and unfortunate that the kittens were in the situation they were in, however, thanks to the brave little swimmers and two amazing fishermen, this story has a very happy ending!

Who says you can't teach an old cat, dog tricks?!

Happy Sunday Funday!

Cats never cease to amaze us all. When Simon was a kitten, he was taught to sit and stay. However, over the last year and a half he hadn't been asked to sit nor stay. I was watching a video of a cat impressively completing an agility track and that got me thinking, how well is Simons memory? If I ask him to sit and stay will he remember what to do, will he even bother because he knows he will probably get a treat anyways! Well, this is my FIRST attempt! I am one proud crazy cat momma!

Costa Rica shutting down all zoos!!

Costa Rica is officially the first country to close all zoos! Unfortunately, due to contractual issues, two zoos will stay open until the end of their contract, a decade. However, after that they will not obtain another contract and will close. Costa Rica is known to have a very diverse animal kingdom, it is home to 4% of the world's known species.

The animals that cannot be released to the wild will have a cage-free, large environment to flourish in. This is great news for animal lovers everywhere and hopefully the start to a world-wide trend.

Good job Costa Rica!

You Won't Believe What This Amazing Charity Does For The Homeless With Pets

Many people are quick to judge the homeless, especially if they have a dog. The most common thought is "You can't take care of yourself, how are you going to care for a dog?" And so on. However, a charity by the name of My dog eats first, run by the amazing Beth Green, proves the homeless are better owners than some wealthy people.

Beth's charity, My dog eats first, goes around to highly populated homeless areas and provides food, leashes, veterinary care and medicine to their pets. It truly is an amazing act of kindness. This video follows the charity in some of their day to day operations.

If that's not inspiring enough, Prank It Forward is filming the video. Tom Mabe, the man on camera, tells Beth that he is filming a documentary and for her co-operation he will donate $200 to her charity. As the video progresses you can see just how much love the homeless have for their pets and how much of an impact My dog eats first makes.

During the filming one of the homeless men that frequents the charity, Ricky, falls very ill. He had to bring his dog, Buddy, to the shelter because he had to go to the hospital right away. Ricky and Buddy had lived in Ricky's car for a very long time and Ricky was heartbroken when he had to say goodbye to his best friend. Unfortunately, Ricky was told he would only have less than 6 months to live. Beth wanted to make sure he could spend that with his best friend and arranged for Buddy to be back with Ricky.

Tom and Prank It Forward have 2 HUGE surprises at the end for both Ricky & Buddy and Beth & My dog eats first! This video will have you smiling from beginning to end!
Please remember to share and help others learn about the amazing charities in place for the homeless.
& don't forget to pay it forward! ♥

Why I can't be trusted with pet paint

As a groomer, I always wanted to experiment with colour and pet paint. However, due to policies, we could only use one brand of horrible pet spray paint that never turned out right and no one wanted it on their pet for that reason. Since moving to the veterinary field, I haven't really been doing much grooming. Today, I came across a box of Bark Art, Pet Paint, and I just couldn't help myself.

This is why I can't be trusted with pet paint.
Review coming soon!

10 Of The Most Rare Dog Breeds (No Specific Order)

To celebrate Dogust, I've gathered up some of the rarest dog breeds in the world! These are in no specific order.

Tibetan Mastiff's are huge but noble. They are easily noticeable with a rather impressive double coat. The breed is known to be an amazing guardian dog, however, its independent qualities make it a difficult dog to partake in activities such as obedience training.

Swedish Vallhund's are quite the opposite, they are smaller, and known to be excellent in obedience and agility training. Known for being fearless pets, the breed is popular among active owners.

Otterhound, per the name, are very efficient in the water. The massive dogs have webbed feet and a resistant double coat. They are great hunting dogs for both land and water.

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are one of the most beautiful on the list for sure. They are multi-colored or spotted and are believed to be the first dogs bred in the United States. They are praised by Native Americans for their incredible hunting abilities.

Azawakh's are known to be timid by nature, but are gentle, affectionate, and protective once they warm up to you. Due to their slim muscular build, they are naturally build to be amazing at agility courses. The breed has a variety of colors and marking possibilities.

Mudi's are a Hungarian herding dog and is built to be with an active family. They are known to be excellent hunters and do best as pets in a large environment. They have a beautiful thick, curly coat and an adorable short smooth face.

Carolina Dog, more commonly known as the American Dingo. Its origins are a free roaming, wild dog. Thought to be the oldest species in North America. Still close to its wild ancestors, it does best with lots of room to run and an active family!

New Guinea Singing Dog, is named because of its distinct voice. It has quite a bit in common with the American Dingo. They share physical features, were both once a wild breed, and are both very active dogs. They are now known for amazing companionship due to their intelligence.

Catalburun dogs succumbed to an unfortunate over-inbreeding due to their rarity, which is possibly the reason for their split nose and suspended ears. Originally hunting dogs, are great dogs for athletic owners.

Telomian dogs are the only Malaysian breed known to live elsewhere. Originally bred by the Orang Asli indigenous people to catch vermin. Due to the Orang Asli building homes on stilts to stay away from dangerous animals, the Telomians developed an amazing ability for climbing.

Which breed is your favorite? :)

The Top 5 Pet Tech You Need To Get!

Technology is no longer just for humans! The rise in 'Pet Tech' is jaw dropping over the past few years! So, what's the coolest/best pet tech the general population can buy? (In no specific order)

1. Petcube
Petcube astonished everyone when they croudfunded over $250,000 in 2013. In February of this year, they released their first model. It contains a plethora of amazing features: integrated camera to watch your furry family member all day long, speaker incase you want to talk to your pet, laser pointer allowing you to play with your pet, connects to your home WiFi and iOS and Android compatible so you can interact with your pet whenever, wherever!
Available at Amazon, Best Buy, Brookstone, B&H, and online at petcube.com and retails for $199.

2. SureFeed® Microchip Pet Feeder
It's important to know that our pets are eating their recommended dosages of food, and that nothing else is eating that food like children or other pets. Instead of a clunky collar, the SureFeed® Microchip Pet Feeder uses the microchip your pet already (or should) have. You easily program the microchip your pet has and the SureFeed will only open when that microchip is at the bowl, and will close when they walk away. In Canada, to buy a SureFeed® Microchip Pet Feeder go to petaccesssolutions.com!

3. Tagg GPS Plus
If you're looking for a feature rich collar for your pet, then you've found it! The Tagg GPS Plus is the latest version of the Tagg range. The collar obviously contains a GPS tracker for checking out where your pet is at any time, an activity monitor to ensure that your pet is getting enough exercise, and it also has the unique feature of a ambient temperature tracker to let you know if your pet is at risk of overheating. It has an impressive improved battery life of 7-14 days, and there is rumor of a future integration with alarm.com and smart home devices. The Tag GPS Plus retails for $119 plus a 9.95 per month fee for the GPS function or you can bay $95.40 for a year subscription and save a little. You can find the Tagg GPS Plus on amazon.com

4. 360 Cam

If you are looking for something that you can use for more than one purpose, than the 360 Cam is for you. 2015 is definitely the year of the camera and the 360 Cam definitely showcases that. They raises almost $1.5 Million on Kickstarter and began making one of the best pet cams. The 3 lenses combine to make 360 degree panoramic picture or video that could give GoPro a run for its money! You can use the camera for a number of things: attach the camera to any collar or harness for a first person few of your dogs day, or a great feature of this camera is that you can get a light bulb attachment and attach it to the roof and use it as a room camera to see what your pets are doing throughout the day from a birds eye view! The 360 Cam retails for $499 and can be found at http://360.tv/#home

5. Fit Bark

Approximately 54% of dogs are obese or overweight. Fit Bark is coming up ways to help prevent, recognize warning signs and help manage weight and activity in dogs. The Fit Bark, in Layman terms, is a fit bit for your dog. It connects with an app that tracks your pets fitness regime: base health line, ratings from the same breed so you know where your dog stands on the breed scale. The Fit Bark retails for around $99.95 and comes in a variety of colors. You can purchase your own Fit Bark at https://www.fitbark.com/store/!

VERY IMPORTANT! We Need To Get The Yellow Dog Project Word Out!

It seems almost every day you go online you see a post about a dog attack – usually some news station reporting exaggerated and false information. According to dogsbite.org, “In North America every day around 1,000 people need medical care from a dog bite/attack. In 2001, an estimated 368,245 persons were treated in U.S. emergency rooms for nonfatal dog bite-related injuries,” and the statistics have remained relatively unchanged. Although the numbers are high for dog bites, I would like to remind everyone that a person is roughly 23 times more likely to be injured from a fall, 12 times more likely to be injured by a car, 7 times more likely to be injured by a sharp object and 1.5 times more likely to be injured by a bicycle (aspca.org). All this data really sinks in when you realize the amount of dogs in society – there are an estimated 75 million pet dogs in the United States alone in 2007-2008. With that being said, I am not saying dog bites are not a problem and do not need to be addressed, but how do we really tackle such a diverse problem? Whenever dog bites or dog bite statics come up, people immediately blame the dog: this breed is vicious, this gender is more likely to bite, these kind of dogs shouldn’t be allowed to be in this place, but this much more vicious but much smaller dog is okay to be here (*cough* Pitbull vs Chihuahua *cough*).

I am not here to preach dog equality, or that humans are the real problem… even if most the time we are. Nevertheless, what I am here to talk about today is the Yellow Dog Project. A HUGE amount of dog bite/attacks can be easily prevented with proper knowledge/awareness. 42% of dog bites in 2001 occurred among children aged 14 years and younger; injury rates were highest among children aged 5-9 years and were significantly higher for boys than for girls. Now, I think pets are vital to a child’s learning and loving process while growing up, however, many attacks on children are simply because the child approaches incorrectly, too aggressively, or simply approaches an unapproachable dog. Be it behavioral, physical, or temporarily emotional, dogs are like humans in the way they can suffer from anger and anxiety problems.

What is the Yellow Dog Project?

The Yellow Dog Project is a way to help both children and adults stay clear of dogs that shouldn’t be approached and need their space or dogs that you need to ask the owner first before going near the dog. For example, a dog that must be approached in a certain way, such as a dog blind in the right eye and need to be approached from left, or dogs that just need their space, such as a dog in pain from surgery. The project is simple, tie a yellow ribbon to the leash (or somewhere visible on your dog while being in public). If you see a yellow ribbon on a dog, then you know to give it space, or make sure to talk to the owner before approaching the dog.

Please be aware, the Yellow Dog Project IS NOT:

An excuse not to train your dog, or any reason to value a dog less.

This worldwide initiative needs to be heard from sea to sea! This project can save many dogs from euthanasia, shelters, and retaliation abuse at the hands of uneducated owners/bite victims and save many people of all ages from bites and possible attacks. If you know a dog who could benefit from the Yellow Dog Project, or would like to donate to the non-profit organization, check out their site at www.theyellowdogproject.com

Who Needs A Hot Water Bottle When You Have A Cat

I have been having tummy issues lately and was advised by my doctor to get a hot water bottle. Well, my cat didn't like that answer, my tummy is his 'spot'!

So like a assumed, the second that hot water bottle went on my tummy, Jedi (one of my cats) came over,  knocked it off and lays right on his "spot" !

I assumed that my tummy would start hurting right away, but the heat coming from Jedi helped settle my tummy!

Its official: why buy a hot water bottle, when you can ADOPT(NOT BUY) a kitty 🐱 !

My amazing boyfriend saw this interaction and took a picture, so cute!
